Women's Soccer Caps Season on a High Note With 1-0 Win Over Fairleigh Dickinson

TEANECK, N.J.- The Sacred Heart University Women's Soccer concluded its 2018-19 season with a win over Northeast Conference Rival Fairleigh Dickinson, 1-0, Sunday afternoon.

After sixteen minutes passed in the first half with tight defense by both sides, the Pioneers jumped out to the lead courtesy of Maranda Gibbons as she finished a cross by Melanie DaSilva at 16:08. The Knights outshot the Pioneers 7-2 in the first half, but shots on goal were even at 2 each as the Pioneers took the 1-0 lead into the break.

The game opened up in the second half with each team tallying more shots on goal than they did in the first. But the goalies on both sides were solid with Nicole Sambuco tallying five saves in the second half, while Fairleigh Dickinson goalie Amanda Fitzgerald recorded four. Neither team could find the back of the net, however, and the Pioneers came away with the 1-0 victory to end the regular season with their second consecutive victory.

The Pioneers finished the season 5-13 overall (3-5 NEC), but after a 1-10 start, went 4-3 over the last seven contests, including back to back victories over Yale (for only the 2nd time in program history) and defending regular season NEC Champion, FDU, to wrap up the 2019 campaign.

"I give our entire team a lot of credit. Early in the season, when the breaks weren't going our way, they could have easily quit, but they never did," Pioneers coach Matt Micros said. "They remained upbeat and continued to work hard right up to the end. We want to thank the senior class for their leadership and are looking forward to building on the momentum of how we finished the season both in the spring and next fall."
