NEW HAVEN, Conn.- The Sacred Heart University Women's Soccer team defeated Yale by a final score of 2-0 tonight. Lindsay Corallo and Melanie DaSilva each tallied a goal for the Pioneers. The team concludes the regular season on Sunday as they will face Fairleigh Dickinson. Game-time is set for 1:00 p.m.
The Pioneers would strike first as senior Danielle Karpiej would complete a pass over to Lindsay Corallo and she would breakaway to fire a shot that would find the back of the net to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead at 9:01. Just four minutes later, Karpiej would fire a shot that would be just saved by the goalie keeping the score 1-0 at 13:00. Both sides would have a limited amount of shots as SHU recorded six compared to Yale's seven.
Both sides would attempt to be more aggressive in the second half as Yale would more than double the amount of shots taken as they fired off 15 shots. But strong defense by both the goalie Nicole Sambuco with her six saves on the night and the tight pressure by Sacred Heart would help lead to the shutout of the Bulldogs. The Pioneers would be able to drive in one more goal courtesy of Melanie DaSilva for her third goal of the season off an well-played cross by Taylor Casale at 47:28 that would give the Pioneers a 2-0 lead. The Pioneers would hold on to earn their fourth win of the season as they will next head to face Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday Oct. 28 for the final game of the regular season.
