Red Flash Edges Pioneers 3-2 in Offensive Battle

FAIRFIELD, Conn- The Sacred Heart University Women's Soccer team (1-10-0 overall, 0-2 NEC) fell to Saint Francis (PA) (4-6-2 overall, 2-0 NEC) by a score of 3-2 this afternoon. The team returns to on Sunday Sept. 30 when they travel to face LIU Brooklyn. Game-time is set for 12:00 p.m. 

The Pioneers would jump to hot start in the first half as Alex Mesropyan would give SHU a 1-0 lead at 9:37 off an assist by Alyssa Highland giving Mesropyan her second goal of the season. The Pioneers would want to score another goal quickly as Lindsay Savko would attempt a shot but would be saved at 11:34 to keep the score 1-0 in favor of SHU. After both sides would fire off shots respectively, Saint Francis would find the back of the net off a goal by Heather Markiewicz to tie the game up at one at 27:53. The Pioneers though would answer back as Taylor Casale would score a goal in the closing minutes of the first half at 37:31 to put SHU ahead 2-1 and the end of the half. 

The second half would begin with two shots taken by both sides but all the shots would not be able to find the net keeping the score 2-1 in favor of SHU at 57:39. Then, off a blocked shot, Saint Francis would tie the game up again at 57:39 courtesy of Sara Suler making the score 2-2. The Red Flash would tack on one more goal at 63:50 as Alyssa McGhee would find the back of the net to edge out the Pioneers by a final score of 3-2.  

Notes:

First Half

  • The Pioneers would jump to hot start in the first half as Alex Mesropyan would give SHU a 1-0 lead at 9:37 off an assist by Alyssa Highland giving Mesropyan her second goal of the season.
  • SHU edged SFU in shots 11 to 10 in the first half. 
  • Saint Francis would find the back of the net off a goal by Heather Markiewicz to tie the game up at one at 27:53.
  • The Pioneers though would answer back as Taylor Casale would score a goal in the closing minutes of the first half at 37:31 to put SHU ahead 2-1 and the end of the half. 

Second Half

  • Off a blocked shot, Saint Francis would tie the game up again at 57:39 courtesy of Sara Suler making the score 2-2.
  • The Red Flash would tack on one more goal at 63:50 as Alyssa McGhee would find the back of the net to edge out the Pioneers by a final score of 3-2. 
  • SHU led the game in shots with 21 to SFU's 20.
