Women's Golf Third After First Round Of SHU Fall Classic

The Sacred Heart University women's golf team is in third place after the first round of the 2019 SHU Fall Classic. The first round, played at Great River Golf Club, was played in on-and-off rain.

The seven-team, 46-player event will conclude Monday with a 10:00 am shotgun start.

The Team Chase

  • Hartford shot a 304 (+16) opening round and leads the event by eight strokes
  • Brown is in second place after 18 holes, while the Pioneers sit in third place, with a first-round score of 317
  • NEC newcomer Merrimack shot 322, good for fourth-place after the first day, and two strokes in front of Hofstra
  • Long Island shot 327 on Sunday, good for sixth place, while Fairfield rounds out the competition with a first-day 361

Pioneer Notes

  • First-year Kailee Welch carded a +3 75, and is two strokes back of the leader, tied for second
  • Christina Massei carded a career-best 18-hole round, shooting 79, and is tied for 9th
  • Ana Contreras is tied for 16th after shooting an 81 Sunday, a stroke and four places in front of Maya Isom
  • Chelsea Thakkar is tied for 26th, shooting 84, while Cora Koproski is 43rd with a round of 98

The Individual Chase

  • Hartford's Marla Loza is one-over after 18 holes, carding a 73
  • Welch is tied for second with Brooke Mackinnon of Hartford at +3
  • Brown's Winnie McCabe (+4) and Roshannah Gaur (+5) are in fourth and fifth place
