  • Field Hockey Bounced in NEC Semifinals by Top-Seeded Fairfield, 2-1

    The Sacred Heart field hockey team closed its season with a 2-1 loss in the Northeast Conference semifinals to top-seeded Fairfield on Friday afternoon from the campus of Wagner College. Kelsy Hopkins was the goal-scorer for the fourth-seeded Pioneers (5-15, 3-3 NEC), who gave the nationally-ranked Stags (17-2, 6-0 NEC) everything they could handle throughout the course of play.

    The wins keep on coming for the Sacred Heart field hockey team as the Pioneers took down Lehigh, 3-2, in non-conference play from Johnson Field on Sunday afternoon. A third straight win for SHU ups their record to 4-11 overall while Lehigh drops to 5-9 with the loss. This marks the third straight win for the Pioneers, signaling the team’s longest win streak since the 2014 campaign.

    NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Sacred Heart University field hockey team defeated NEC-foe Merrimack at home, 4-0, Sunday afternoon at Johnson Field. Makenna Crawford, Bridget Kelly, Kayla Kruk and Bridget LaRiccia tallied a goal apiece, while goalkeeper Hailey Power tallied 11 saves en route to the third shutout of her career. With the win, the Pioneers improve to 2-11 on the season and 1-1 in the NEC, while the Warriors fall to 2-10 on the season with the loss and 1-2 in the NEC. SHU will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 18 when the Pioneers play host to Bryant at 7 p.m. at Johnson Field.

With the loss, the Pioneers fall to 1-7 on the season, while the Riverhawks improve to 3-3 on the season with the win.     FAIRFIELD, Conn.. - The Sacred Heart University women's volleyball team defeated Northeastern in three sets (25-20, 25-22, 25-22) to open day two of the SHU Invitational Saturday afternoon. With the win SHU improves to 4-4, while Northeastern falls to 4-5. Julia Murawinski led the Pioneers with 11 kills, while Sarah Ciszek added 37 assists, eight kills and six digs. Jasmine Rogers contributed a career-high 10 kills in the win as well. The Pioneers return to action tonight at 6 p.m. vs. Fairfield to close the SHU Invitational.

Colleen McAninley scored the game-winning goal, while Kayla Bedel-Franklin, Mia Katterman and Julia Chang tallied a goal apiece in the win. The Pioneers improve to 1-2 on the season with the win, while the Red Flash fall to 0-3 on the season with the loss. SHU will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 8 when the Pioneers take on Yale at Johnson Field at 1 p.m.

The Pioneers fell to 0-1 to open the season with the loss, while the Explorers open the season at 1-0 with the win. SHU will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 1 when the Pioneers travel to take on Villanova at noon.

    FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Sacred Heart University field hockey was picked to finish fourth in the Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll, as announced by the conference office on Friday. The Pioneers, who were picked to finish fifth last season, finished 8-12 and made a postseason appearance for the first time since 2014. Head coach Sydney van der Merwe returns for his fourth season at the helm and returns 18 letterwinners from last season's squad, including All-MAAC Second Team selections Kelsy Hopkins, Colleen McAninley and Hailey Power.
