The Sacred Heart University women's bowling team is set for its sixth NCAA Tournament appearance. The Pioneers will take on Caldwell University on April 6 in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The match will be played as Millsboro Lanes in Millsboro, Del.
"It is exciting as this team has never experienced this postseason before," said Pioneers 26th-year head coach Becky Kregling. "They worked very hard to get to this point and I couldn't be prouder of them."
The Pioneers earned an automatic bid to the National Collegiate Bowling Championship after winning its fourth NEC title in program-history. As a play-in team, the Pioneers will compete for a spot in the National Collegiate Women's Bowling Championship held from April 11-13.
The Pioneers are led by Rachel Bamford and Colby Jones. Bamford earned All-NEC First Team honors with a 47.1 strike percentage and a 93.2 single-pin spare percentage, ranking her in the top-10 in the nation. Jones earned All-NEC Second Team honors with an 1856 pins per frame average and 80.7 filled frames.
"In the three years I have been here I never expected us to be here," said junior Tori Boughton. "It is a dream to see our name up there and to know that we are in the NCAA Tournament."
The winner of the SHU – Caldwell match will advance to take on top-seeded Commodores of Vanderbilt. The pairings were announced during the NCAA Women's Bowling Selection Show.
