Antler and Harnsberger Go 2-0 As Pioneers Drop Two Duals

Fairfield, CT.- The Sacred Heart Pioneers wrestling team hosted a pair of duals today, first taking on the Huskies of Bloomsburg, where the Pioneers would fall 28-21.  Alex Harnsberger, and Elliott Antler lead the Pioneers, both going 2-0 on the day. The Diplomats of Franklin and Marshall would go on to take the match 25-18 to close out the dual. 

Gerard Daly started things off for the Pioneers picking up a late pin in the third period. Despite trailing early in the opening match of the day, Daly hit a slick mat return, followed by a turk to hold his opponent and pick up the fall. The Huskies would respond in the next bout, picking up a decision and moving the dual 9-6 in favor of Bloomsburg.

The match moved to the 149 pound division as Alex Harnsberger came up big for SHU. Harnsberger lead the entire match and eventually caught his opponent at the 4:38 mark to pick up the fall, and give Sacred Heart their first lead of the night. In similar fashion the Huskies would again return the favor, picking up a back-to-back first period pins over Casey Mitchell, and Matt Fisher to reclaim the lead 21-12.

Bloomsburgs Trevor Allard would keep the Huskies ahead, as he picked up the 12-6 decision over Dom Celli, to move the dual score 24-12. The Pioneers would send out Elliott Antler at 184 looking to get back within striking distance of the Huskies. Antler and his opponent were locked at 2-2 at the end of regulation forcing overtime. Antler would pick up a late takedown in the 3rd overtime to take the match 5-4.  Bloomsburg would forfeit the 197 pound weight leaving the score 24-21 in favor of the Huskies coming down to the last weight. John Hartnett couldn't get it done, losing by major decision 10-0. The Pioneers would go on to lose the dual 28-21.

SHU got off to rough start in their second dual of the night giving up a forfeit at 125 pounds, followed by a fall at 133. The Pioneers got things started at 141 as Brandon Levesque got two early takedowns over F&M's Patrick Quinlan to take a 4-1 lead to end the first. Quinlan would respond in the second to pick up a reversal and close the gap 4-3.  Levesque would go on to win by decision 13-7.

Harnsberger was next for SHU at 149, and grabbed an early escape in the second period to take a 1-0 lead. F&M's Sam Butler snagged a takedown late in the third, but a quick escape for Harnsberger and tied it up 2-2 to force overtime. Harnsberger would go on to win 3-2 in the third overtime. Casey Mitchell would take the mat next for SHU. Mitchell gave up an early takedown in the first but was worked his way out for an escape, trailing 2-1. Mitchell would get a late reversal to lead 3-2 going into the third period. Mitchell would go on to fall 6-4. The Diplomats were successful at 165, picking up a 14-5 major decision, but the Pioneers would respond as Dom Celli solidified a big second period to go on and pick up a decision 8-4.

Elliott Antler came out at 184, and picked up a take down two minutes into the first period to lead 2-0. Antler would then pack it on grabbing another takedown to make it 5-1 going into the third period. Antler would hold on to pull out a 6-1 decision and bring the team race to 19-12 in favor of F&M.

Sasha Oliinyk came out at 197, as the Diplomats would send Anthony Mancini. Oliinyk picked up a takedown that was followed by a quick escape to bring the score 2-1 going into the second. Oliinyk would give up an escape and go on to fall by a third period pin. Rounding out the night was John Hartnett who picked up a fall. The final score was 25-18, in favor of the Diplomats.

The Pioneers are back home next weekend hosting Binghamton, at 5:00pm Saturday, January 28th.
