Pioneers Compete At Wilkes Open. Brady Takes Second

The Sacred Heart Wrestling team hit the road to compete in the Wilkes Open, and ended the day placing 11th among the 41 colleges and unattached wrestler. The Pioneers managed to land one wrestler in the finals, and a couple among the top 10 in their respective weight class.

Kyle Brady (149) led the Pioneers placing second among the 26 other wrestlers in his bracket.  The road to the finals started as Brady pinned his first opponent in 1:33.  In the Round of 16 Brady went on to win by major decision 15-6 over LeBarron of Keystone College.  Moving to the quarterfinals Brady managed to pick up the 8-3 decision over Mauriello who was an unattached wrestler. With the finals in sight Brady went on to the semi finals where he squeezed out a 2-1 decision to land a spot in the 149-pound finals. Kyle went on to lose his final match of the day 12-6 against Schuyler of Lehigh to finish the day with silver.

Casey Mitchell also saw success advancing to the quarterfinals after two decisions. Mitchell defeated Boyle who was an unattached wrestler 2-0 to start his day and went on the beat Williams of Chicago 7-0 to get him a spot in the quarter finals where he went on to lose to Staudenmayer who is an unattached wrestler as well. As Mitchell moved to wrestle backs he won his first match by major decision 10-2 prior to falling in the round of four and placing in the top 8 at the 157 pound bracket.

The last Pioneer who showed success was Matt Fisher who finished in the top 12 at the 165-pound bracket.  Fisher suffered a tough opening round where he fell the Walter of Lehigh, but battled back to claim a spot in the top 12 after picking up two victories in the wrestle backs.

The Pioneers head to Chicago the 29th-30th to compete at the Midlands known as one of the toughest tournaments of the year.
