FAIRFIELD, Conn.- The Sacred Heart University Men's Tennis team has released their 2019-20 schedule as announced by head coach William Boe-Wiegaard this afternoon. The Pioneers will kick off the season on Friday, Sept. 14 as the Pioneers compete at the UCONN invite.
Following the UCONN invite, the team will travel to face Holy Cross on Sunday Sept. 22, for a single matchup beginning at 11:00 a.m. Then the Pioneers kick off the month of October on the road at Quinnipiac for a head-to-head match at 1:00 p.m. The following day, SHU will host Siena at 12:00 p.m. at Eisenhower Park in Milford, CT.
Six days later on Oct. 12, the Pioneers will stay on the road to face in-state rival UCONN for a 10:30 a.m. start. The following day the Pioneers will face Fairfield on the road following the women's match which begins at 11:30 a.m. Then after Columbus Day Weekend the team will travel to the ITA Regionals at the University of Pennsylvania which begin on Thursday Oct. 17 and run to Tuesday Oct. 22.
SHU kicks off the month of November at the CT State Championships which run from Friday, November 1-3.
Following winter break, the Pioneers start off the spring term at home against Boston University on Saturday Jan, 25 for a 5:30 p.m. start. The following day the Pioneers will face Davidson at the Armonk Indoor Bubble on Sunday Jan. 26 at 12:45 p.m.
The month of February will begin with a matchup at Brown on Sunday, Feb. 2 at 3:00 p.m. Then the following week the Pioneers will return home to face Bucknell with a start time to be determined. Then on Tuesday, Feb. 18 the Pioneers travel to face Hofstra before heading to Orlando from March 2-3.
After the Pioneers face NJIT on March 13, the Pioneers kick-off Northeast Conference play at Saint Francis (N.Y.) on March 14. After two non-conference matchups at Boston College (3/21) and Fordham (3/22) the Pioneers return to conference play at Bryant (3/28) followed by Merrimack the following day. The Pioneers conclude the regular season at home first against Fairleigh Dickinson (4/2) followed by Wagner to conclude the season on April 10.
The Pioneers concluded the 2018-19 season with a 6-13 record overall and a 3-3 conference record. Sophomore William Wibmer earned All-NEC First Team honors after tallying 16 wins overall in singles play while going a perfect 6-0 in NEC play. He was named NEC Rookie of the Week four times this season while picking up NEC Player of the Week once on April 16. Junior Seiji Hosokawa picked up All-NEC Second-Team Honors for going 3-3 in NEC Play and tallying a 9-18 record in singles play while recording a 10-17 record in doubles play.
