Pioneers Face-off Against Crusaders in Holiday Weekend Pair

Nov. 26, 2008

Setting the Scene... Sacred Heart meets Holy Cross in a pair of holiday weekend matinees. The Pioneers were swept in a set at Air Force last week while Holy Cross split two games with AIC. The teams meet Saturday in Milford and Sunday in Worcester. The puck drops both days at 4:05 pm with coverage of Saturday's game on and both games carried on the B2 Network.

The Series... Sacred Heart and Holy Cross split their four game series last year with each team winning on their home ice. The Pioneers had won seven straight games before losing in Worcester last January. SHU has won seven straight games against Holy Cross in Milford, dating back to January of 2005. Sacred Heart leads the all-time series with Holy Cross 18-16-1.

Pioneers Grounded By Falcons... The Pioneers lost a pair of games at Air Force last weekend. Friday's 8-1 loss was the most lopsided loss for SHU since a 9-1 loss to St. Cloud in 2004, and the most lopsided conference loss since a 10-2 setback to Canisius in 1998, the program's first season in Division I. Freshman Matt Gingera and junior Corey Laurysen scored the Pioneer goals. Laurysen has scored goals in each of the Pioneers last three series. Sacred Heart has never won in Colorado Springs, going 0-4-2 in six games.

New Kid on the Block... Leading the group of Pioneer recruits is Matt Gingera. Gingera leads the Pioneers in scoring this year with three goals, five assists and eight points. He had a six game point streak snapped Friday against Air Force. Gingera led the Manitoba Junior League in goals with 66 last season while playing for the Winnipeg Saints.

Balancing Act on Attack... The Pioneers have had 13 different players score goals and have 18 players with at least one point. Eric Giosa is back for his senior season after scoring 10 goals last year and currently has a team high four scores on the season while defenseman Corey Laurysen has three.

Scouting the Crusaders... A young Holy Cross team which features just two seniors is off to a 3-8-1 start this year after splitting a pair of games with AIC last weekend and losing to Boston University on Tuesday. Junior Brodie Sheahan leads the Crusaders attack with four goals, eight assists and 12 points on the season. Sophomore Jordan Cyr has scored a team leading five goals. In goal, sophomore Adam Roy is back for his second season as a starter and has a 3.24 goals against average and .889 save percentage in 11 starts. As they did last year, the Crusaders have struggled on the penalty kill early on this season, killing off just 77.5 percent of penalties against, fifth worst in the nation.

Up Next... Sacred Heart takes on UConn in the final game before final exams Tuesday night in Milford. The Pioneers and Huskies face-off at the Milford Ice Pavilion at 7:05 pm and coverage of the game can be heard on the Pioneer Radio Network and B2 Networks.
