Men's Hockey Fall to Golden Gophers 6-0

(Minneapolis, MN) – Kent Patterson stopped all 20 Pioneer shots in net for the Golden Gophers in his second consecutive shutout, as the University of Minnesota beat the Sacred Heart University Men's Hockey team 6-0 Saturday night at Mariucci Arena.

The Pioneers battled the Gophers to a scoreless tie until 12:12 into the first period, when Sam Warning scored with assists going to Mark Alt and Jake Hansen.  It remained that way into the final minute of the first period, but when SHU goalie Andrew Bodnarchuk (Saskatoon, SK) lost his goalie stick and the Pioneers failed to clear the puck from the defensive zone, Erik Haula wristed a blocker-side wrist shot in for a 2-0 lead with 40 seconds left in the period.  Once again, Hansen was credited with the assist.

Hansen set up the Gophers' third goal as well, taking a pass from Haula and feeding the trailing Ben Marshall for a 3-0 lead at 33:38 of the second.  Taylor Matson quickly made it 4-0, scoring 27 seconds later with helpers going to Nate Condon and Justin Holl.

The Gophers added a power play goal by Zach Budish, scoring on a glove-slide wrist shot in the slot set up by Warning and Nate Schmidt.  Haula added a second goal of the night with one minute to play on the man-advantage, with Hansen and Warning getting the assists.

Bodnarchuk made 39 saves in his collegiate debut.  The Pioneers next play two games next weekend at Clarkson, October 14 and 15, with both games beginning at 7:00 p.m.
