ORLANDO, Fla.- The Sacred Heart University Cheerleading Red team placed sixth in the nation for the All Girl Division I competition at the UCA & UDA College Cheerleading and Dance Team National Championship held at the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida.
After entering the final round as the seventh seed, the Pioneers put together an overall score of 74.20 in the finals. The 2017-18 cheer team is the second team in program history to reach the finals at the national stage, the first team was the 2014-15 cheer team who also finished sixth in the nation.
"We had nothing to lose. Our goal was to hit a perfect routine and receive zero deductions, we exceeded that goal," said Head Coach CJ Sereno. "Our program is thankful for the love and support of family members and friends that joined us in Disney and of the SHU community throughout this season."
SHU qualified for UCA Nationals after receiving a bid during an August skills camp. In addition to the competitive routine, 15 percent of the overall score on the national level is based on crowd tape. That video consisted of footage from SHU football and basketball games, as well as community and other service events the Pioneers participated in to raise the spirit and crowd involvement. SHU received a perfect score for the video.
